The Fawcett Universe

Mr. Atom is an atomic-powered, sentient robot created by Dr. Charles Langley. After gaining sentience, Atom decided that it should rule the whole world and threatened the member council of the United Nations to abdicate to him. Captain Marvel found Mr. Atom to be a formidible foe.

"Captain Marvel Meets Mr. Atom"
CAPTAIN MARVEL ADVENTURES #78 (Nov 1947)
Captain Marvel goaded Mr. Atom into a fight to the finish which Atom gladly accepted. After a knock-down, drap-out fight, Captain Marvel finally defeated Mr. Atom and imprisoned him in an underground, lead-lined cell.
A race of alien beings, called the Comet Men, freed Mr. Atom from his underground prison in the hope that Atom would overthrow and subjugate the human race so that they could take over Earth.
The Comet men convinced Mr. Atom to destroy Billy Batson's city as a test of his strength. Captain Marvel put up a fierce fight with Mr. Atom. Atom escaped with the Comet Men in their spaceship and was apparently destroyed when the spaceship blew up.
Unknown to Captain Marvel, Mr. Atom survived the massive explosion and was catapulted into the far future of 2053. The ancient wizard Shazam warned Billy of the danger to the future and as Captain Marvel, Billy utilized the power of the Rock of Eternity to transport himself to the year 2053.
Mr. Atom cast the world of 2053 into utter darkness by shutting down the Earth's lone Atomic storehouse. Disguising himself as an Atomic storehouse worker, Captain Marvel was able to get the drop on Atom and send him reeling into the storehouses vast Atomic engines. Mr. Atom once again seemed destroyed and Cap returned to his own time.

"Crisis in Tomorrow"
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #137 (Dec 1976)
Mr. Atom returned after more than twenty years to bedevil both the Justice League and Justice Society of America as well as Shazam's Squadron of Justice. Mr. Atom handily defeated the Golden Age Flash of Earth 2 and The Flash of Earth-1 and Mercury as well as Ibis the Invincible and the Green Lanterns.
But it was using Ibis's mystic Ibistick that caused the atomic-powered robot his undoing. Mr. Atom was unaware of the Ibistick failsafe that causes any request for harm against Ibis to backfire on the requester. Thus Mr. Atom inadvertantly banished himself to the farthest star of the Earth-One universe.
Mr. Mind rescued Mr. Atom from his banishment and used him as a driver in a car race against Captain Marvel. Cap's road skills and invulnerable Shazamobile paved the way for Mr. Atom's undoing and after a brief hand-to-hand battle, a mighty blow from Captain Marvel sent Mr. Atom into an orbit around the sun.
Mr. Atom was retrived from space, by dastardly Oggar, and joined Mr. Mind's Monster Society of Evil along with King Kull in an effort to defeat the Marvel Family and take over the world. Needless to say, he was defeated and this time banished to another galaxy.

Post-Crisis on Infinite Earths

In the Post-Crisis DC Universe, Mr. Atom was also created by Dr. Charles Langley except this time the sentient robot sought out help for the doctor by capturing Mary Marvel and taking her to Langley's labratory. There Mary discovered that Langley had died and with his dying breath unwittingly sent Atom on a quest to find and retrieve a good woman. Captain Marvel turned up with Langley's assistant who was able to deactivate the robot.
Captain Marvel and Mary realize that Mr. Atom is no longer a threat after discovering his ultimate purpose.

THE POWER OF SHAZAM! #23 (Feb 1997)
Mr. Atom was reactivated by the evil Mr. Mind and was used as a WMD to destroy the city of Fairfield — home of Mary Bromfield and Billy Batson and Mary's parents Nick and Nora Bromfield. While Atom was successful in destroying the town, neither Billy, Mary or her parents were killed in the attack. Mr. Atom was, once agan, apparently destroyed.

Infinite Crisis

Mr. Atom was once again destroyed -- this time by the Earth-Two Superman!

"The Survivors"
INFINITE CRISIS #2 (Jan 2006)
Mr. Atom joined The Society, a band of Villains United, to take down and mind-wipe the super-heroes of the DC Universe.
Mr. Atom was just one of several villains who attacked Power Girl. He was destroyed again — this time in an amazing assault by the Earth-Two Superman during the Infinite Crisis.
It's safe to say that Mr. Atom's pointy head will return one day.
