Finally, Finally a Name for Cap!
Sunday, September 7, 2008
The Fawcett executives had deemed the name Captain Thunder as inappropriate for their new hero. Perhaps they wanted a name that matched Superman's in its definition. Various names were suggested until artist Pete Costanza offered up Captain Marvelous. Like the Man of Steel's name, it suggested that there was something more than ordinary about the character but like the name Superman, it was vague enough to mean anything. Shortly after approving the name, it was shortened to be less than a mouthful and to be more concise in its definition. And that's how the name of Captan Marvel was born!

Shazam! Fun Fact Text
Fawcett's new character was going through an identity crisis. The first two titles for his new comic had been rejected and now even his own moniker was deemed inappropriate!

The Fawcett staff were brainstorming night and day — until artist Pete Costanza hit on the winning combination... Captain Marvelous. That's how the World's Mightiest Mortal got his name!

Although Costanza's suggestion met with approval, it was decided that the name was too long and was shortened to "Captain Marvel!"

Pete Costanza was C.C. Beck's main inker and an accomplished penciller as well.
