Happy Christopher Reeve Day!
Thursday, September 25, 2008
Christopher Reeve and Walt GroganWe're taking a break today from covering the history of Captain Marvel to spread a little love Superman's way or more specifically Christopher Reeve!

Today is Chris's birthday and I didn't want it to go by without a tip of the hat to the big guy. It's been a few years since he passed away but I'll never forget the courage he displayed as he struggled against his disability while fighting for others that were also afflicted with spinal cord injuries. I'll also never forget the night I met him.

It was back in late 1979. My buddy Frank Bonilla called me up and told me that he had heard that Chris was going to make a live in-studio appearance on the CBS 10 O'Clock News and he wanted to know if I was interested in going down to the studio to meet him. Was I ever! Chris was in town to film some scenes for his follow-up film to Superman, a feature named Somewhere in Time (which is also a great movie, by the way).

SupermanFrank and I drove down to the CBS studios and waited patiently outside until a station wagon pulled up. Out hopped movie critic Gene Siskel and ... Christopher Reeve. Frank and I walked up to Chris and asked if we could have our photo taken with him. Gene Siskel was in a hurry and was shooing Chris into the studio but Chris said he had a couple of minutes and he graciously spent some time with us before heading inside.

It's a night I'll never forget — primarily due to warmth Chris had laid on us. Thanks, Chris!
