As powerful as Cap was, the Fawcett writers were concerned about making him too powerful! If nothing could harm Captain Marvel, his stories would lack conflict.
As early as Whiz Comics #3, the writers decided that powerful, deadly gas could knock Cap out for a time, but not kill him — it also showed that a little squirt like Sivana could take on Captain Marvel!
